“Taking a break”

When a student who has taken a break returns to KUMON, they will not pick up where they left off in the curriculum. Over time, the skills that students have built through daily study have weakened. Thus, when a student returns to KUMON after an extended absence, the Instructor will determine a previous point of study for them to begin again at, usually at least a half-level before where they left off.

Tuition

The monthly tuition is due in advance on or before the first of the month. For example, December’s monthly tuition is due by December 1. We require payment by EFT (electronic funds transfer). This is a very simple, secure, automatic and inexpensive payment option. Complete information about our tuition rates are available in our enrollment contract, which parents receive upon enrollment.

Tuition policy is as follows:

  • Tuition is due on or before the first of the month.
  • A $25 late fee will apply if tuition is not received before or on the first day of the month that payment is due.
  • A student may be absent, at no charge, without being discontinued as long as the student is not absent for more than one month in a calendar year.
  • Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited should a student discontinue enrollment or if work is taken at any time during the month.
  • A 30-day written notice is required before leaving the program. Failure to give written notice 30 days in advance will result in the forfeiture of deposit. Your account will be closed 30 days after we receive your notice to terminate. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received.
  • In cases of medical or other emergencies where a 30 day notice is impossible to give, please call us and we will do what we can to accommodate your situation.
  • Tuition is pro-rated for the first month only according to the day of the month enrolled. Full tuition is charged for subsequent months until 30 days written notice is given to terminate enrollment.

Holiday or vacation schedules

Vacation Schedule is available online for parents to let us know when your child will be missing several regularly scheduled classes and need extra work

Planning and organizing work for your child takes a great deal of thought and organization. We require at least 1 day notice before any extended absence in order to put your child’s vacation packet together.

If we do not receive advance notice, we will try our best to put a packet together for you by the end of class that day. You may return to class 15 minutes before closing to pick it up. If we are too busy and are not able to put work together, we will call you and arrange to have it ready for you by the next scheduled class session.

Please let us know if you want your child to take a few days off, lessen the daily workload, or even increase the amount of work to be done over your vacation. However, if a parent requests extra work or an increase to the regular daily workload while on vacation, the work must be home graded. Extra work will not be included into the student’s lesson plan if it has not been home graded by the parent while on vacation.

Center closures

Center closings are announced well in advance. We use all of the venues available to us to inform you of any schedule changes. Center closures are announced on the bulletin board in the parent waiting area, in the monthly newsletter, verbally when your child checks in and out of class the week before a closing, on the entrance door, and on the website.

The Center follows the federal holiday schedule for closing, but not exactly. Please check the website, the newsletter, or with Center staff for information on specific dates that we will be closed.

Student incentives

As strict as we are about homework completion (please see section on “Incomplete homework”), we are equally committed to rewarding students for their dedication and effort.

Students are awarded KUMON dollars at each class if all of their homework and classwork have been completed and corrected. Prize day is the first class day of every month.

Through their effort and self-discipline, our students are able to earn tangible and frequent rewards for their hard work.

Students do not get a KUMON dollar if their work is incomplete.

Incomplete homework

Everyone has a crazy day from time to time where the schedule goes out the window. This happens to KUMON students, too. However, we are very strict about homework completion. We expect our students to come to class with all of their KUMON homework 100% complete, along with all mistakes corrected. Students who come to class with work that is incomplete must complete all of it at the Center before beginning the classwork for the day, as well as make all corrections.

If there are extenuating circumstances that have prevented your child from completing their work at home, please be sure to send in a note or email alerting us in advance that the homework has not been done. We will reschedule their work for them.

Corrections and home grading

The active supervision of daily assignments at home is linked to each child’s success in the KUMON program.

It is crucial that parents provide a 10-15 minute block of time per subject for the completion and correction of daily KUMON assignments.

It is the job of the parents to insure that assignments are timed, that errors are marked, and that mistakes are corrected by the student before beginning new work.

All parents are expected to home grade their child’s KUMON homework. Students whose parents’ home grade make faster, smoother progress through the KUMON program because:

  • your child corrects their mistakes daily, thus learning from their mistakes and making fewer mistakes overall
  • your child repeats less
  • your child is more motivated because you are involved
  • you are more motivated because you know exactly what your child is doing

A basic tenet of the KUMON Method is that students learn from their mistakes. KUMON students are required to correct every mistake on every set they complete. Students whose parents do not home grade spend a great deal of time in class correcting mistakes from old homework before they can begin the days’ classwork. Lots of correction greatly discourages students. This often leads to an extended stay at the center. Students are also required to correct all mistakes on their daily classwork as well.

What if I miss a class?

Everyone misses a class sooner or later. Either the child is sick, the traffic is bad, or a practice runs late.

Work for the whole week is provided on Mondays. If your child misses a class on Monday, his or her work will be placed in the homework box outside for you to pick up at your convenience. If your child misses a class on Thursday, the child should already have the work in his or her KUMON bag. For certain students who are not scheduled to come on Monday, please verify with the Instructor on the homework pick up day.

If a student misses a regularly scheduled class and does not pick up the homework, the work for the days missed is forfeited and will be reassigned for the next class. Work missed due to an unexcused absence cannot be “made up”.

Completed and corrected assignments are used to develop and modify each student’s individualized lesson plan. For this reason, new assignments will not be given after the 2nd subsequent unexcused absence until the previously assigned work is returned.

Please be sure to notify us at least one class session in advance of any extended vacation in order to give us ample time to plan and organize for your child’s absence. Thanks!

Termination policy

If a student is going to drop out of a class, either temporarily or indefinitely for some reason, a written notice is required at least 30 days before the effective date. Notice of Transfer or Termination form is available online.  Failure to provide such notice will result in continued charges to your account. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received. Your account will be closed 30 days after we receive your Notice of Transfer or Termination.

Tuition is pro-rated for the first month only according to the day of the month enrolled. Full tuition is charged for all subsequent months until 30 days written notice is given to terminate enrollment.

Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited should a student discontinue enrollment. In cases of medical or other emergencies where a 30 day notice is impossible to give, please call us and we will do what we can to accommodate your situation.
